Who we are

The College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources evolved from the original Storrs Agricultural School, which was established in 1881. As Connecticut’s land-grant university, UConn has federal and state mandates to carry out the tripartite mission of teaching, research, and outreach education. The Storrs Agricultural Experiment Station administers the College’s research programs, while the Cooperative Extension System works with 7,438 volunteers and eight county extension councils to provide outreach education to Connecticut citizens. College faculty, staff, and students explore the interrelationships among food, natural resources, and human and animal health, seeking to connect them in a manner that is economically viable and environmentally sustainable.

Agricultural and Resource Economics

Animal Science

Pathobiology and Veterinary Science

Farms and forest

Farms: The Department of Animal Science currently manages approximately 550 acres of land. The land is used for corn, pasture, hay and grass silage production.

The PSLA Research and Education Farm has 153 acres with 40 acres of research fields and greenhouses. Two classrooms provide students practical experience. Research activities are conducted in the areas of turfgrass, ecology, entomology, floriculture, forages, soils, sustainable agriculture, vegetables, weed ecology and control, and woody and herbaceous ornamentals.

UConn Forest: Approximately 2,100 acres are actively managed by CAHNR's Department of Natural Resources and the Environment for research, teaching, recreation, watershed protection, wildlife habitat and wood products.

Events and programs

  • Career Development Events (CDEs) (fall and spring): hosted by CAHNR for Connecticut’s High School Agriscience. Fields of study range from food science, to dairy judging, vet tech, forestry, floriculture, and a variety of other fields.
  • Career Night: Held in early November each year to bring students who have an interest in agriculture, health, environment, and related fields together with employers in these fields, Center for Career Development, Study Abroad, and graduate school representives. Students learn about career options in the field of study they are pursuing or considering. 
  • Commencement: Held at the beginning of May.
  • Fall and Spring Open Houses provide opportunities for prospective and admitted students to visit campus and explore what UConn and CAHNR/RHSA have to offer.
  • Scholars’ Night brings together scholarship donors, student-recipients and their guests, faculty, and staff.
